The Waterfront District

sized for powerpointThe Port and City have joined forces to cleanup and redevelop 220 acres of mostly vacant and contaminated industrial property located along 3 miles of Bellingham's central waterfront. New homes, businesses, and light industry will be surrounded by large waterfront parks, miles of new public access to the shoreline, moorage docks for visiting boaters, a new waterfront campus for Western Washington University, and a 450-slip, state-of-the-art marina.

In total, the Port and City are planning to make huge investments now and in the future to revitalize the downtown waterfront and jumpstart the redevelopment effort. The State of Washington also is contributing funding for about half of the environmental cleanup costs and for portions of the redevelopment. Smart growth principles and sustainable development practices are being used to enhance the property's stunning natural features and transform The Waterfront District into a model for environmental innovation. When completed, Bellingham's newest neighborhood will offer a waterfront experience unparalleled in the Pacific Northwest.
