The Waterfront District

sized for powerpointThe Port is working to cleanup and redevelop 220 acres of contaminated industrial property located along Bellingham's central waterfront to create new economic opportunities and new jobs. The Port and the City of Bellingham are working together to complete a master plan, design guidelines and development phasing plan that will allow a mixed-use redevelopment to begin. The property will include several development areas, each with a distinct character. A Marine Trades Area is being planned alongside the anticipated Clean Ocean Marina. Adjacent to Downtown Bellingham, the development area will feature mixed use, residential, corporate campuses and educational facilities. New public parks and trails are a vital part of this project and will be created as development occurs.

The goal is to transform this idle brownfield into a thriving, energized part of our community. This large land area won't change overnight, but will take decades of investment and development. It will happen in phases so that roads, bridges and other necessary public investments can be made.

Since acquiring the Georgia Pacific Pulp and Paper Mill property in 2005, the Port has been working with the City to support the community's vision of a vibrant, mixed-use waterfront.  The Port will pay for the costs of environmental cleanup and recover this investment through the future sale or lease of the property. The City will pay the costs of streets, utilities and parks and recover this investment from revenue gained by increased property values on the waterfront.
