Port Commission Elects Officers, Establishes Meeting Times

[Bellingham, Wash.] In the first Port of Bellingham Commission meeting of the new year, the Port Commission selected its officers, established the regular commission meeting schedule for and two Commissioners were sworn into office.

At the January 10 meeting, Whatcom County Auditor Shirley Forslof administered the oath of office to Port Commissioners Doug Smith and Scott Walker. Both were re-elected last November. Smith has served on the Commission for seven years and Walker for 15 years. Each term will last four years.

The Commission chose Jim Jorgensen to serve as president, Scott L. Walker, vice president, and Doug Smith as secretary for 2006.

The Commission also set the date, time and location of the regular commission meetings for 2006. The regular meeting dates will continue to be at 3 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 1801 Roeder Avenue.

The Commission also voted to appoint Walker to serve on the Bellingham/Whatcom Economic Development Corporation and Smith to serve on the Whatcom Council of Governments.

The Port of Bellingham operates Whatcom County’s major transportation terminals including the Bellingham Airport, Fairhaven Transportation Station and the Bellingham Cruise Terminal. The Port also serves about 2,000 moorage customers in its Blaine and Squalicum Harbors.

In addition, about 300 businesses operate on Port properties, which are managed by the Port Real Estate Division. The Port of Bellingham is a countywide independent special purpose government.
