Sand in the City™ comes to Bellingham
New Sand Sculpting Competition Event is September 29-Oct. 1
[Bellingham, Wash.] Imagine a competition to sculpt 240 tons of sand into some amazing creations and you're not even at the beach! Add master sand sculptors, a giant children's sandbox, great food, and some arts and craft vendors and what do you get? The first annual Sand in the City™ at Squalicum Harbor--a free community event to benefit the Marine Life Center.
The Port of Bellingham and Northwest Discovery Project invites everyone to enjoy a fun-filled weekend on the waterfront with live music, great food, and amazing sand sculpting competition and exhibition, at the first Comcast’s Sand in the City™ celebration. Admission is by donation (suggestion donation of $5 per family) and parking is free.
Sand in the City™ will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 29 – October 1, from 10 am to 6 pm, at the Squalicum Harbor Boat Launch Parking Lot on Roeder Avenue just past Bellwether in Bellingham.
Ten corporate teams have been working all summer long with local architects to draw up designs and practice their sand sculpting skills on six yards of sand. On Friday from 10 am to 4 pm, they will put their talent to the test in the sand sculpting competition. The creations will be judged by local artists Jody Bergsma and Tom Wood, actor Ryan Stiles and Cody Rivers Show funnymen Andrew Conner and Mike Mathieu will judge entries and hand out the coveted "Golden Shovel" trophy at 5 pm. On Saturday and Sunday, bring the whole family and enjoy the array of live entertainment from jazz to Celtic to classic rock. Watch master sand sculptors at work creating a huge sculpture or build your own sand castle in the giant community sandbox. Check out craft vendors and specialty food vendors who will be serving a menu variety from BBQ, hamburgers, hotdogs, chili and all the fixin’s, espresso and more. All weekend long you can vote for your favorite sand sculpture & People's Choice Award: Purchase a "sand dollar" for one dollar to support the Marine Life Center and vote for your favorite creation.
