Michael Alvarez Shepard has lived and worked in Bellingham for over 25 years. In addition to his work as a commissioner, he is a professor in the Anthropology Department at Western Washington University. He has previously worked for Northwest Indian College and Whatcom Community College. Commissioner Shepard holds two degrees from WWU and received his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia. Commissioner Shepard has been a board member of the Kulshan Community Land Trust and the Lummi Marine Trades Education Program. He works on a broad range of issues important to the Port of Bellingham, including workforce development, environmental sustainability, marine resource management, and affordable housing. Commissioner Shepard and his wife have two young children and own a home in Bellingham's Fountain District. He and his family enjoy great local food, a variety of outdoor sports, and international travel.
